From tobacco powder in Native American ceremony, to snuff in the European court; from a pinch of moist tobacco under a Swedish labourer’s lip, to today’s thin white pouch — the relationship between people and nicotine has been migrating and re-engineering itself for five hundred years. This is not the story of a category that exploded out of nothing. It is a single technical line: away from combustion, and away from the leaf, toward precise delivery.
From Sacred Leaf to the Name “Nicotine”
Before Europeans reached the Americas, tobacco was already in use among indigenous peoples for ceremony, for socialising and in traditional medicine. It was smoked, chewed and taken nasally, often in parallel.
Around 1560 the French ambassador to Portugal, Jean Nicot, brought tobacco to the French court and recommended tobacco powder to Catherine de’ Medici as a remedy for headaches. From there tobacco spread through the European upper class. The genus Nicotiana — and later the word nicotine itself — both take their name from Nicot.
The Swedish Rework: From Nose to Lip
Snuff reached Sweden in the seventeenth century. Through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, farmers and artisans began placing moist tobacco between the upper lip and the gum instead of taking it nasally. Nothing had to be lit, no ash was produced, and the work did not have to stop. Swedish oral tobacco — snus — took shape around that constraint.
In 1822 Jacob Fredrik Ljunglöf took over the family business, the Ettan recipe was established, and production moved toward a standardised process. One point is worth keeping straight: modern Swedish snus is characteristically heat-treated, not fermented in the way some American and European moist snuffs are.
The structural leap came in 1977, when Tre Ankare launched in a pre-portioned pouch. Enclosing the tobacco in a small pouch kept fingers clean and made dosing consistent. That format is the direct product prototype for everything that followed.
After 2008: The Pouch Leaves the Leaf Behind
The real watershed arrives in the twenty-first century. Niconovum, founded in Sweden by the smoking-cessation researcher Karl Olov Fagerström, launched Zonnic in 2008; the company described it as the world’s first pouched tobacco-free nicotine product, initially positioned on a nicotine replacement therapy route.
In 2014 Swedish Match launched ZYN in the United States and subsequently widened retail coverage. This generation of pouches contains no tobacco leaf. A typical formulation is nicotine, plant fibre or another filler, flavourings, and pH adjusters. In 2022 Philip Morris International acquired Swedish Match, and ZYN moved onto the “smoke-free future” map of a global tobacco major.
Why It Broke Out
The commercial logic is unusually direct. No combustion means none of the tar and carbon monoxide that cigarette burning produces. No charging, no vapour and no ash means the product works in offices, on transport, and in the other settings where smoking is inconvenient or prohibited. None of this makes it risk-free — but it does make it a non-combustible route worth attention for adult smokers switching completely.

Philip Morris International disclosed that smoke-free products accounted for 42% of group net revenue in the first half of 2026, and that ZYN shipments in the second quarter of 2026 reached 2.9 billion pouches, up around 2% year on year.
Regulatory recognition took a decisive step as well. The US FDA first authorised twenty ZYN products for marketing in January 2025, then on 30 June 2026 permitted those specific products to carry a particular reduced-risk statement relative to cigarettes. That decision applies only to the authorised products. It does not mean “harmless”, and it does not approve them as a cessation medicine. The Next Contest: Compliance, Materials and Packaging Engineering
The closer a category gets to the mainstream, the less optional regulation becomes. The United States emphasises age restriction, premarket review and postmarket surveillance. The current EU Tobacco Products Directive does not uniformly cover nicotine pouches, and member state policy diverges accordingly. The WHO continues to warn about flavour marketing and youth uptake. The CDC notes that nicotine is addictive and that the long-term health effects of pouches still require more research.
So the next phase of competition is not only about flavour and strength. It is about dose consistency, seal and moisture retention, child-resistant opening, warning labelling, material compliance, portable storage, and compatibility with automated filling lines.

When a product moves from “it works” to “it scales, it is auditable, and it is sustainable”, the packaging stops being a shell. It becomes part of the category’s competitive capability.
Nicotine pouches will not end cigarettes overnight. But they have already pushed the industry’s central question from how do we burn it to how do we not burn it. From leaf to fibre pouch, what changed is the carrier. What is genuinely being rewritten is the value chain.
